The following is from Russ' bio listed on QRZ.COM, an amateur radio call sign search engine.

Russ says: "I am looking for WU folks who are hams interested in RTTY or WU folks interested in Teletype in general.

I've met a lot of hams on RTTY worldwide but none with a WU background.   I've met a lot of folks interested in Teletype but none from WU.   I'm sure that some are still out there".

My first interest in Radio came from Scouting.   I built a radio to qualify for a merit badge.  That led to my building a shortwave radio and listening to hams on AM.   I found the call signs of a few local Hams who helped me get my first license in 1964, as WN3AYY.   School work and a lack of interest in CW caused me to lapse my first license.

I visited the University of Pennsylvania Amateur Radio Club (W3ABT), between classes, in the winter of 1965-66.   There, I had access to a Collins S-Line and monobanders at 135 feet.   This is where I heard my first exotic DX.   It was Macao, long path, on 20 meters SSB.   I studied and took my tests again and got my General license in the summer of 1966 as WA3FRP.   My interest in DX spread to contesting and I helped W3ABT achieve DXCC.

It was at this time that the club discovered a Teletype Model 19 set that had been donated to the University by Bell Telephone of Pennsylvania.   From that point, my focus was getting the Teletype machine on the air.   I was able to get WAC RTTY (#106) for W3ABT in May 1968.  This was the first College / University station to win this award.

My interest in Ham Radio, specifically RTTY, led to a very successful 35 year career in data communications.   My first job, after getting my Electrical Engineering degree at Penn, was Resident Engineer for the Philadelphia Telex department for the Western Union Telegraph Company.   So, my hobby became my job...

My career at Western Union lasted 16 years.   I subsequently moved on to two other companies in the Philadelphia area before starting my own consulting company in 2004.

When I am not working, I spend my time traveling, playing tennis and working on and restoring my collection of Collins and Teletype equipment.

Look for me on 15, 17, 20 and 30M RTTY!
